This Handbook gives an insight into the construction and usage of telecommunication cables. Telecommunication cables represent a large investment and provide a vital link in transmitting information. Accordingly, they must be designed to provide a consistent, reliable electrical path while resisting mechanical and environmental conditions imposed during their installation and service life. Good quality materials need to be selected and arranged to meet local conditions and cost objectives.

Protection against mechanical damage

Mechanical damage is very wide-spread both during installation and the lifetime of the cable. In recent years progress has been made in the theoretical research of cable reaction to applied forces and in the practical application of new or improved protective (plastic) materials and alloys. The information given in this chapter is far from complete and only gives some relevant examples of mechanical influence on cables and the countermeasures which can be taken.
