Accordingly, they must be designed to provide a consistent, reliable electrical path while resisting mechanical and environmental conditions imposed during their installation and service life. Techniques and instrumentation to locate faults

Fault locating instruments are used to locate resistance conductor faults, open and split conductor faults and cable sheath faults. This equipment generally can be separated into two types, terminal and tracer. Terminal types are devices which are applied only at terminations of the cable, and all tests concerning type and location of the faults are made at this point. Tracer types are devices wherein a signal is applied at the cable terminals and some form of pick-up device is moved along the route of the cable to detect absence, presence or changes in the effects of the applied signal. Generally, terminal type equipment is quicker and easier to operate, but tracer types may allow more accurate pinpointing of the fault location.
