Foreword

For over one hundred years it has been recognised that the audio quality of communications systems needs to be assessed subjectively, in order to be meaningful. While there are known audio applications that enable accurate prediction of users’ judgements on the basis of objective measures, there are many other applications – for example, new speech processing systems – whose quality can only be meaningfully assessed by subjective testing.
