This Handbook gives an insight into the construction and usage of telecommunication cables. Telecommunication cables represent a large investment and provide a vital link in transmitting information. Accordingly, they must be designed to provide a consistent, reliable electrical path while resisting mechanical and environmental conditions imposed during their installation and service life. Good quality materials need to be selected and arranged to meet local conditions and cost objectives.

Portable instruments

Cable pressurization systems are permanently provided with pressure control or gas-flow control equipment so that most leaks in the cable sheath can be detected and located before circuits in the cable are affected. The accuracy with which cable sheath defects can be located using equipment installed at or controlled from the terminal stations will depend on the uniformity of the cable system and the accuracy and disposition of the control equipment.
