Protection of staff and of telecommunication installations against the adverse effects of high earth potentials in the neighbourhood of electric installations

Currents flowing in the ground in the case of a short-circuit to earth in an electric system will cause a rise of earth potential, in relation to a distant earth (reference potential), in the regions where current enters or leaves the ground.
