From handyphone to i-mode

In the fast-growing field of mobile communications, it is often Western Europe that steals the headlines. Widespread adoption of the digital GSM standard has given that region an impressive lead in mobile communications. For example, several Nordic and southern European countries now have more mobile than conventional fixed telephone subscribers and the cross-over point will come soon in some of the larger economies too. The European Union has pushed member countries to license third generation (3G) networks quickly in order to maintain this perceived lead, at both vendor and service provider levels.
